    Evidence:Fictional scene

    Evidence:Fictional scene

    Evidence:Fictional scene

    Evidence:Fictional scene

    Evidence:Supported

    Evidence:Fictional scene

    Evidence:Supported

    Evidence:Fictional scene

    Evidence:Supported

    Evidence:Supported

    Evidence:Fictional scene

    Evidence:Supported

    Evidence:Supported

    Evidence:Supported

    Evidence:Fictional scene

    Evidence:Fictional scene

    Evidence:Fictional scene

    Evidence:Fictional scene

    Evidence:Fictional scene

    Evidence:Fictional scene

  • Hindu Manners, Customs and Ceremonies (3rd ed., 1906)

Abbe J. A. Dubois; translated and edited by Henry K. Beauchamp

    Evidence:Supported

Abbe Dubois' 1906 account of a Brahmin's daily routine in south India describes visiting the nearest temple in the evening with an offering such as lamp oil, coconuts, bananas, camphor or incense, then walking once around a shrine to Vigneshwara (Ganesha) followed by a squatting gesture holding the ear lobes, twice around a Siva shrine, and three times around a Vishnu shrine. Dubois presents this as one observer's description of one community's custom, not a universal rule.

  • The Grihya-sutras, Rules of Vedic Domestic Ceremonies, Part I (Sacred Books of the East, vol. 29)

Hermann Oldenberg (trans.); F. Max Muller (ed.)

    Evidence:Supported

The Sankhayana-Grihya-Sutra records that during a student's initiation the teacher leads the new student around the sacred fire, turning the student's right side towards it, before the student goes into the village to beg food, starting with his own mother; together with the Paraskara passages this shows that walking around a sacred fire with one's right side facing it was a regular step marking important moments such as weddings and the start of a student's learning.

Thurston's 1912 account of a new-rice (harvest) ceremony from the Malabar/Palghat region (present-day Kerala) describes the man carrying the first ears of paddy being met at the gate by a woman holding a lighted lamp; indoors, on a verandah decorated with rice paint, he walks around a small plank three times, sets the paddy down facing east, and the lamp is placed on his right, with offerings then made to Ganapathi.
