    Evidence:Fictional scene

    Evidence:Supported

    Evidence:Supported

    Evidence:Supported

    Evidence:Supported

    Evidence:Supported

    Evidence:Supported

    Evidence:Supported

    Evidence:Supported

    Evidence:Supported

    Evidence:Supported

    Evidence:Supported

    Evidence:Plausible, not proven

    Evidence:Fictional scene

    Evidence:Fictional scene

The Lingodbhava story, told almost identically in the Linga, Kurma, Vayu and Shiva Puranas, describes how at the end of an age Brahma and Vishnu met and quarreled over which of them was the true creator of the universe, whereupon a towering linga like the great cosmic fire, blazing with hundreds of tongues of flame, appeared between them. To resolve the dispute, Brahma took the form of a swan (hamsa) and flew upward to find the top of the fiery pillar, while Vishnu became a boar and burrowed downward to find its base; neither could reach an end, and both realized something greater than themselves had appeared, so they praised the pillar of fire. Shiva then revealed himself within the fiery linga and declared that Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva are ultimately one reality, appearing as three separated aspects. In the fuller Puranic account, Brahma falsely claimed to have reached the top of the fiery pillar, using a ketaki flower as a false witness, and for this lie was cursed never to receive temple worship. In South Indian Shaiva temple architecture, the Agamas direct that the Lingodbhava scene be carved in a niche on the outer western wall of the sanctum of the central shrine, a placement also matched by the temple tradition recorded at Tiruvannamalai.

  • Karthigai Deepam: The Tamil festival of lights

Ministry of Tourism, Government of India (Incredible India)

    Evidence:Plausible, not proven

For Karthigai Deepam, Tamil households traditionally clean their homes, draw kolam designs, hang mango-leaf festoons, and light rows of clay agal lamps and decorative lamps such as the Kuthu Vilakku, with some families observing a fast until after sunset. A second Karthigai Deepam legend tells of the god Muruga, born as six babies in the Saravana pond and cared for by the six Krittika star-mothers, who were later united into a single child by Parvati. Some accounts trace references to Karthigai Deepam back to Sangam-era Tamil poetry attributed to Avvaiyar.

In South Indian Shaiva temple architecture, the Agamas direct that the Lingodbhava scene be carved in a niche on the outer western wall of the sanctum of the central shrine, a placement also matched by the temple tradition recorded at Tiruvannamalai. According to Tiruvannamalai temple tradition as recorded by Jagadisa Ayyar, Vishnu and Brahma once argued over who was greater, and a huge flame - said to be none other than Shiva - rose up between them to show that someone was greater still; Brahma became a swan to search for its top and Vishnu a boar to search for its base. A footnote in Jagadisa Ayyar's account places the original flame incident on the night of Sivaratri, while Shiva's appearance as a bright light for Brahma and Vishnu's worship is placed on the day of Karttikai (generally the full moon of the Tamil month Kartika, under the Krittika star) - which is said to account for the importance of the Karttikai festival at Tiruvannamalai.

  • Maha Deepam Festival, Thiruvannamalai

Ministry of Tourism, Government of India (Utsav portal; organiser listed as TN HR&CE Dept.)

    Evidence:Supported

At the Arulmigu Arunachaleswarar Temple in Thiruvannamalai, Karthigai Deepam is celebrated as a ten-day festival called Maha Deepam or Annamalai Deepam during the Tamil month of Karthigai (November-December); Thiruvannamalai is regarded as one of five element shrines, where Shiva is believed to be present as the hill itself, representing the element of fire. The ten-day Thiruvannamalai festival opens with flag-hoisting and includes daily processions of the deities on a different vahana (vehicle) each day; on the tenth day a Bharani Deepam with five 'Agni Deepams' is lit inside the temple, followed by the lighting of the great Maha Deepam on the hilltop in the evening for the crowds of devotees gathered there.
