  • Elements of Hindu Iconography, Vol. II, Part 1 (1916)

    T. A. Gopinatha Rao

    Evidence:Supported

Agama-based instructions for images of Kalarimurti describe Shiva with three eyes and four or eight arms, one leg raised to kick or rest on Yama, holding a trident, while Yama is shown small, two-armed, holding his noose and making anjali (folded hands) in fear. Sculptures of this scene survive at Ellora, showing the boy kneeling before the linga and Yama still holding the noose that had bound Markandeya's neck.

  • Elements of Hindu Iconography, Vol. II, Part 1 (1916)

    T. A. Gopinatha Rao

    Evidence:Supported

According to the Purana story summarized in Gopinatha Rao's study of Kalarimurti iconography, the sage Mrikandu was long childless and was offered by Shiva a choice between many foolish sons or one highly intelligent son destined to live only sixteen years; he chose the latter, and his wife Manasvini gave birth to Markandeya. On learning of his short life, Markandeya set out to worship at holy places and, as tradition holds, reached Tirukkadavur, where he became absorbed in worship of the Shiva linga. When Yama's messengers were unable to take Markandeya, Yama came himself and moved to bind the boy, at which point Shiva burst out of the linga in anger and struck Yama. Yama concluded that such a devoted worshipper should not be treated like an ordinary mortal, and Shiva blessed Markandeya to remain sixteen years old forever so that the decree of death could not operate on him; he is counted among the chiranjivis (immortals). In the Tamil country, this episode is traditionally believed to have taken place at Tirukkadavur in the Tanjore (Thanjavur) district.

  • South Indian Shrines (Illustrated) (1920)

    P. V. Jagadisa Ayyar

    Evidence:Disputed

A local tradition reported near Sringeri, at the Khandeya shrine on the Bhadra river, holds that Mrikandu Rishi performed austerities there and received from Shiva the choice between a foolish son of normal lifespan or a wise son fated to die at sixteen. Through pilgrimage, austerities and repetition of a sacred mantra, Markandeya is said to have 'won from Siva victory over Yama.' A footnote in the same source states that the scene of Shiva's defeat of Yama for Markandeya's sake is said to have taken place in the village of Tirukkadayur near Mayavaram, where the temple holds a metal image of Kalasamharamurthi depicting Shiva slaying Yama for Markandeya's sake. Different regional traditions attribute different parts of the Markandeya story to different places: a local tradition near Sringeri (Karnataka) locates Mrikandu's austerities and the birth-boon there, while a separate tradition centered on Tirukkadayur (Tamil Nadu) locates the climactic defeat of Yama; the source itself highlights this split attribution.

  • Amirthakadeswarar Temple, Thirukkadaiyur

Karaikal District Administration (Govt. of Puducherry UT)

    Evidence:Supported

The Amirthakadeswarar Temple at Thirukkadaiyur is associated with the legend of Markandeya: when Yama came to take the boy's life, Markandeya clung to the temple's Shiva linga, and Shiva, pleased by his devotion, saved him from death; the temple's own sthala purana (local temple legend) holds that Shiva's defeat of Yama took place at this very site. The Thirukkadaiyur temple is well known today for long-life birthday rites — Shashtiabdapoorthi at 60, Bhimaratha Shanti at 70, and Sadabhishekam at 80 — and for its connection to the poet-saint Abirami Pattar and his hymn the Abirami Anthathi.

  • The Mahabharata, Book 3: Vana Parva (Markandeya-Samasya Parva)

    Kisari Mohan Ganguli (translator)

    Evidence:Supported

In the Mahabharata's Vana Parva, Markandeya is portrayed as an extremely long-lived sage: Yudhishthira addresses him as one who has 'seen many thousands of ages pass away' and says none in the world is as long-lived as he; Markandeya there recounts wandering through the waters of cosmic dissolution and seeing a vast banyan tree with a radiant boy seated on its bough, whom he worships.
