    The Asvalayana Grihya Sutra instructs that in the evening the worshipper should face the north-west (the region between the west point and the north-western point of the horizon) and murmur the Savitri from when the sun is half-set until the stars appear. The Asvalayana Grihya Sutra further instructs that in the morning the worshipper should stand facing east until the disk of the sun appears.

  • Hindu Manners, Customs and Ceremonies (3rd ed., 1906)

    Dubois describes achamana as part of the morning sandhya he observed in South India around 1800: water held in the hollow of the right hand is sipped three times, after which the worshipper touches the nose, eyes, ears, navel, chest, head and shoulders with the fingers, sprinkles a few drops of water on the head, and pours a little on the ground; he also notes the sandhya was repeated at noon and evening with different prayers.

  • Hindu Manners, Customs and Ceremonies (3rd ed., 1906)

    In a South Indian household practice described by Abbe Dubois, after completing ablutions the worshipper turns toward the sun, takes water into cupped hands three times, and offers a libation to the sun by letting the water run off the fingertips.

    The Laws of Manu instruct that one should stand during the morning twilight, muttering the Savitri until the sun appears, and should recite it seated in the evening until the constellations can be seen distinctly.

    According to Griffith's translator footnote, this stanza is known as the Savitri or 'the Gayatri par excellence,' described (citing H. H. Wilson) as the celebrated verse of the Vedas forming part of daily devotions, addressed to Savitar as the impelling power of the sun and asking him to inspire the worshippers' thoughts and prayers; Sir William Jones's paraphrase renders it as a prayer for the divine sun to guide understanding aright.

    The Sankhayana Grihya Sutra describes the evening twilight devotion (Sandhya) as performed in a forest setting: the worshipper sits holding a piece of wood, observes silence, faces the north-west, and continues until the stars appear, murmuring the Mahavyahritis, the Savitri, and auspicious hymns as the twilight passes. The same Sankhayana Grihya Sutra passage describes the morning twilight devotion as performed standing, facing east, and continuing until the disk of the sun appears.
